Biografie / Biography
Dr. Birger Stichelbaut (°1982) finished his master degree in archaeology in 2004 at the Department of Archaeology (UGent). In the period 2005-2009 he was a Research Assistant of the research Foundation Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen) and publically defended his Phd “World War One Aerial Photography: an Archaeological Perspective” in April 2009 (members of the jury: Prof. Dr. Wlodek Radcowski, Dr. Nicholas Saunders, Dr. Robert Bewley, Prof. Dr. Rudi Goossens, Prof. Dr. Arjen Bosman).
Birger Stichelbaut is interested in the themes of archaeological aerial photography, historical aerial photography, GIS and the conflict archaeology of World War One. He is also responsible for the coordination of the oblique aerial photographic prospection in the provinces of East and West-Flanders. He currently works as a post-doctoral researcher at the department carrying out a large scale inventory of World War One sites in West-Flanders using historical aerial photographs (1915-1918). This project is a collaboration between the In Flanders Fields Museum, the Province of West-Flanders and the UGent Department of Archaeology and will finish in 2012.
